Sri Lanka is strengthening its efforts to position Colombo as a major cruise tourism hub in the Indian Ocean, with the Government and private sector exploring new opportunities to attract international cruise operators and generate greater economic benefits from cruise tourism.

Ocean Cruise Global Accounts Director Thushaan Kunabalasingam, who works with major international cruise operators, highlighted Sri Lanka’s strong potential as a cruise destination. The country’s strategic location, established tourism infrastructure and proximity to important regional cruise routes provide significant advantages for attracting international cruise traffic.

Discussions with the Sri Lanka Ports Authority (SLPA) have also examined Colombo’s potential to accommodate larger cruise vessels carrying approximately 5,000 to 7,000 passengers. Improving the ability to handle larger ships could help Sri Lanka attract more cruise lines and strengthen Colombo’s position within regional cruise itineraries.

Beyond port facilities, Sri Lanka is focusing on creating stronger links between cruise operators, hotels, travel agencies and tourism businesses. The aim is to develop attractive packages that encourage cruise passengers to experience more of Sri Lanka rather than limiting their visits to short stops around the port.

Encouraging passengers to leave their ships and explore the country could create wider opportunities for the tourism sector. Hotels, transport providers, tour guides, travel agencies, restaurants, attractions and local businesses could all benefit from increased visitor spending.

Sri Lanka is also looking to attract a greater share of cruise traffic currently heading towards destinations such as the Maldives. Its strategic location, diverse attractions and established tourism ecosystem could give the country a competitive advantage in the growing Indian Ocean cruise market.

For Colombo to become a successful cruise tourism hub, stronger cooperation between port authorities, government institutions, hotels, travel companies, cruise operators and local businesses will be essential.

A more connected cruise tourism ecosystem could help transform Colombo from a short-stop destination into a gateway for exploring Sri Lanka, while creating new opportunities for businesses and communities across the country.
