Galle Fort has emerged as Sri Lanka’s most visited tourist attraction, appearing in the itineraries of 54% of foreign travelers, according to the latest survey by the Sri Lanka Tourism Development Authority (SLTDA). The survey covered 11,731 departing tourists over the year ending June 2025.

Galle Fort was followed closely by Ella and Sigiriya Rock Fortress, each included in 53.1% of visitor itineraries. The figures indicate a shift in traveler preferences, with international visitors increasingly drawn to destinations offering distinctive experiences, walkable environments, natural scenery and strong visual appeal.

The change is particularly notable compared with the previous 2018/19 survey, when Colombo led with 68.3% and the Temple of the Tooth followed with 64.9%. In the latest survey, Colombo ranked fifth at 46.2%, while the Temple of the Tooth recorded 51.3%.

Galle Fort also recorded the highest number of repeat visitors among the surveyed attractions, with 772 returning tourists. However, the average stay within the Fort was only 1.63 days. Nearby coastal destinations such as Weligama, Hikkaduwa and Mirissa recorded considerably longer stays, highlighting an opportunity to connect Galle Fort with the wider southern coast through multi-day travel experiences.

The findings highlight a broader change in Sri Lanka tourism, as travelers increasingly look for destinations that combine culture, nature, food, lifestyle and memorable experiences rather than simply traditional sightseeing.
