Sri Lanka is exploring the introduction of passenger drone services as a potential new addition to the country's tourism industry, opening the door to a more technology-driven way of experiencing popular destinations.

A recent discussion at the Ministry of Ports and Civil Aviation included officials and representatives from China-based EHang, which presented two-passenger electric aircraft designed for autonomous operation.

Potential locations discussed for the service include Sigiriya, Pidurangala, Colombo and Port City Colombo, with a possible demonstration zone being considered in Port City. These locations could offer visitors a new way to experience Sri Lanka's landscapes and urban attractions from the air.

However, passenger drone services would require extensive approvals before commercial operations could begin. Authorities would need to address aviation safety, regulations, air traffic management, cybersecurity and other operational requirements.

The exploration of passenger drones highlights Sri Lanka's growing interest in combining tourism with emerging technology. If successfully developed and regulated, aerial sightseeing could become an innovative addition to the country's tourism offering and create new experiences for international visitors.

For destinations such as Sigiriya and Pidurangala, which already attract travelers with their spectacular landscapes and cultural significance, new technology-based experiences could further diversify the tourism products available to visitors.
