Minister of Foreign Affairs, Foreign Employment and Tourism Vijitha Herath will undertake an official visit to Thailand from September 14 to 16, 2026, following an invitation from Thailand’s Minister of Labour.

According to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Foreign Employment and Tourism, the visit will focus on strengthening bilateral relations and advancing cooperation between Sri Lanka and Thailand in several areas of mutual interest.

During the visit, Minister Herath is scheduled to hold discussions with Thailand’s Minister of Labour, Minister of Tourism and Acting Minister of Foreign Affairs. The meetings are expected to address opportunities for expanding practical cooperation and strengthening economic and people-to-people links between the two countries.

A key outcome of the visit will be the strengthening of bilateral cooperation in the labour sector through the signing of two agreements. These include a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) on Labour Cooperation and a Memorandum of Agreement (MoA) concerning the employment of Sri Lankan workers in Thailand.

The agreements are expected to provide a stronger framework for cooperation on employment, migration and labour mobility while creating opportunities for Sri Lankan workers seeking employment in Thailand.

Tourism will also be an important area of discussion during the visit. Sri Lanka and Thailand have longstanding cultural and people-to-people connections, while both countries have strong tourism industries with opportunities for greater collaboration, including tourism promotion, travel connectivity and exchanges between tourism stakeholders.

The visit comes as Sri Lanka continues to expand international partnerships to support tourism growth and strengthen economic opportunities. Closer cooperation with Thailand could create new avenues for tourism-related business engagement while encouraging greater movement of visitors and professionals between the two countries.

The Ministry said the official visit will provide an opportunity to advance practical cooperation in tourism and employment, strengthen collaboration on migration and labour mobility, enhance people-to-people connections and further develop bilateral economic engagement.

The planned agreements and high-level discussions are expected to provide a foundation for deeper cooperation between Sri Lanka and Thailand across tourism, employment and other areas of shared interest.
