The Meteorology Department has issued a warning over high waves and possible seawater inundation in nearshore areas stretching from Beruwala to Matara via Galle.

According to the Department, wave heights in sea areas extending from Colombo to Pottuvil, including the waters off Galle, Matara and Hambantota, could reach between 2.0 and 3.0 metres.

Naval personnel and fishing communities operating in the affected sea areas have been advised to remain vigilant and take necessary precautions. Residents living along the specified coastal regions have also been urged to exercise caution and stay alert to changing sea conditions.

The warning may also affect beachgoers, tourists and tourism businesses operating along the southern and western coastline, particularly those involved in swimming, surfing, boating and other ocean-based activities. Visitors are advised to follow local safety guidance and avoid entering the sea in areas where conditions become dangerous.
