A group of 200 Japanese tourists has travelled to Sri Lanka on a single SriLankan Airlines flight, highlighting growing interest in Sri Lanka as a destination for Japanese travellers and strengthening tourism ties between the two countries.

The group, organized by the Little Japan Group, departed from Narita International Airport aboard SriLankan Airlines flight UL455.

Sri Lanka’s Ambassador to Japan, Prof. Pivithuru Janak Kumarasinghe, together with First Secretary (Commerce) Sandun Sameera, met the travellers at the airport before their departure and provided support for the group’s journey.

During their visit to Sri Lanka, the tourists are expected to explore several popular destinations, including Sigiriya, while also experiencing the country’s traditional Ayurveda treatments and wellness offerings.

The Sri Lankan Embassy in Japan supported the tour by providing guidance, facilitation and assistance to the organizers and visitors.

Ambassador Kumarasinghe described the movement of 200 Japanese tourists on a single flight as one of the largest organized groups of Japanese visitors to travel to Sri Lanka together. He noted that the development reflects growing interest among Japanese travellers and the continued efforts of Sri Lanka’s tourism industry and other stakeholders to strengthen tourism exchanges between the two nations.

Japan remains an important source market for Sri Lanka, with the country’s cultural attractions, heritage sites, wellness experiences and natural landscapes offering opportunities to attract more Japanese visitors.

The Ambassador expressed hope that continued growth in arrivals from Japan would contribute to Sri Lanka’s broader tourism recovery and support the country in reaching and potentially surpassing previous tourist arrival records.

The arrival of larger organized tourist groups also highlights the potential for stronger cooperation between Sri Lankan tourism businesses, airlines, travel agencies and Japanese tour operators, creating further opportunities to expand the tourism relationship between the two countries.
