Tourism is being highlighted as an important part of Nepal’s economic recovery following the devastating floods and flash flooding that damaged infrastructure and affected communities across parts of the country.

According to experts cited by NDTV, tourism contributes around 7% of Nepal’s GDP and supports about one million jobs, creating income not only for hotels and tour operators but also for transport providers, guides, farmers, artisans and other local businesses.

The recent disaster has raised concerns among international travelers, particularly because images of damaged infrastructure can create the impression that the entire country is unsafe. However, the impact has been geographically limited, with major destinations including Pokhara, Chitwan, Lumbini, Pashupatinath, the Everest region and the Annapurna Circuit continuing to welcome visitors.

Experts say maintaining responsible tourism activity can help keep rural economies functioning while generating foreign exchange and income needed for recovery and reconstruction. At the same time, stronger disaster preparedness, resilient infrastructure and better early-warning systems will be essential for Nepal’s tourism sector in the future.

The situation highlights an important reality for destinations affected by natural disasters: when travel is safe, responsible visitors can support local communities while helping tourism businesses recover.
