Interactive Time Travel: Bringing Sri Lanka's UNESCO World Heritage Sites to Life via AR & VR

Discover how augmented and virtual reality are transforming Sri Lanka's UNESCO World Heritage sites like Sigiriya, bridging ruins with immersive digital history.

Imagine standing at Sigiriya with a smartphone in your hand. You point the camera towards an ancient structure and, instead of seeing only surviving foundations and walls, your screen displays a carefully researched digital reconstruction of the historical environment. Buildings appear in their approximate original positions, architectural features become visible and historical information appears alongside the physical remains. This is the potential of augmented reality and virtual reality in heritage tourism.

Sri Lanka is particularly well suited to digital heritage experiences because it possesses an exceptionally rich collection of internationally recognised cultural and natural heritage. Sri Lanka currently has eight UNESCO World Heritage properties: six cultural properties and two natural properties. The cultural properties include the Ancient City of Anuradhapura, Ancient City of Polonnaruwa, Ancient City of Sigiriya, Sacred City of Kandy, Rangiri Dambulla Cave Temple and the Old Town of Galle and its Fortifications. The natural properties include the Sinharaja Forest Reserve and the Central Highlands of Sri Lanka.

Augmented reality can add a digital information layer to physical heritage. A visitor walking through an archaeological site could point a smartphone towards a monument and access historical information, old maps, 3D models, audio explanations and translations. This can make complex archaeological environments easier for visitors to understand. Instead of simply looking at a surviving wall, the traveller can learn about the structure, its function and its historical context.

Virtual reality offers a different experience. Instead of adding information to the physical world, VR can place users inside a digital environment. This could be particularly useful for people who cannot physically reach difficult locations, school students studying Sri Lankan history, international audiences planning future visits and people with mobility limitations. Recent research has explored immersive virtual tourism and historical education using Sigiriya as an example, demonstrating the growing interest in this approach.

Sri Lankan academic research has also examined the potential of augmented reality in heritage tourism. A 2024 study investigating AR and heritage tourism in Sri Lanka reported a positive relationship between AR use and destination satisfaction, with perceived value and immersive experience playing important roles. Research at the University of Peradeniya has similarly explored interactive three-dimensional virtual tourism systems for Sri Lankan heritage locations.

However, digital reconstruction introduces an important responsibility. Archaeological evidence is not always complete. When the original appearance of a building is uncertain, a digital reconstruction should not present speculation as unquestionable fact. A responsible system could distinguish between documented evidence, probable reconstruction and interpretive reconstruction. This would allow visitors to understand not only the history of a site but also how researchers develop interpretations from archaeological evidence.

International heritage organisations are already exploring similar technologies. UNESCO's Dive into Heritage initiative uses digital technologies, 3D models, geolocation and multimedia to provide immersive access to World Heritage. UNESCO has also highlighted tools such as drones, photogrammetry, three-dimensional mapping and artificial intelligence as technologies that can contribute to heritage documentation, monitoring and interpretation.

For Sri Lanka, the long-term opportunity is significant. A national digital heritage platform could allow visitors to explore destinations before travelling, use AR navigation during a visit and continue learning about a site after returning home. Such a platform could transform the visitor experience from simply "seeing ruins" into understanding the civilisation, engineering, religion, architecture and society that produced them.

The objective should never be to replace the physical heritage site. AR and VR should instead help visitors see what is otherwise invisible.
