Booking.com Is Not the Problem. Depending on It Completely Is.

Learn how hotels and villas in Sri Lanka can increase direct bookings while still benefiting from Booking.com, Agoda and other OTAs.

Hotels and villas often talk about direct bookings and OTAs as though they have to choose between them. In reality, platforms such as Booking.com, Agoda and Airbnb can provide enormous value to tourism businesses in Sri Lanka. They give properties access to travellers who may never have discovered them independently.

The problem is not using Booking.com. The problem begins when nearly every booking depends on it.

A business that relies entirely on another platform for customer acquisition has very little control over how travellers discover the property. A healthier direct-booking strategy does not start by abandoning OTAs. It starts by building additional ways for guests to find and trust the business.

Consider what happens after someone discovers a hotel on Booking.com. They like the photographs, location and reviews, but before booking they search the property's name on Google. At that moment, the hotel's own digital presence becomes important. Does a professional website appear? Is the Google Business Profile properly maintained? Are there strong photographs and recent reviews? Can the traveller clearly identify the official contact details?

The OTA may have created the discovery, but the property's digital presence can strengthen the decision.

This is also why having a website does not automatically mean a hotel has a direct-booking strategy. The website must provide a reason to use it. It can tell the complete property story, show more detailed room information, highlight experiences, introduce the destination and create a direct relationship between the traveller and the business.

The next step also needs to be easy. Depending on the property, this could be an online booking engine, WhatsApp, a simple enquiry form or another direct reservation process. What matters is removing unnecessary friction. A traveller who is ready to book should not have to search through several pages just to find out how to contact the property.

Generating direct demand becomes even more powerful when hotels start building visibility beyond their own brand name. A hotel in Ella should not only depend on someone already knowing what it is called. Search visibility around phrases related to Ella accommodation, boutique hotels, mountain-view properties and destination information can introduce entirely new travellers to the business.

Social media can support the same process by creating interest before someone starts actively searching for accommodation. Remarketing can reconnect with people who previously visited the website but were not ready to book. Previous guests can eventually become repeat customers without needing to rediscover the property through an OTA every time.

This creates a much healthier mix. Booking.com can continue generating bookings. Google can create discovery. Social media can build desire. The website can build trust. Direct channels can create customer relationships.

That is what reducing OTA dependency actually means.

The goal is not to remove every third-party booking platform. It is to avoid putting the future of the business entirely in the hands of one of them.

At Tourithm, we help tourism businesses build the digital infrastructure needed to develop direct demand over time, connecting websites, SEO, Google visibility, OTA optimization, professional photography and digital marketing into a stronger overall booking system.
